Hungover Parents
Time is money.
Today was an odd day. What should have been a windfall wasn't but as I noted, I learn more each day,not just about people but UberShalom. Aloha. Howdy..
My first drive of the morning was at 5:58AM about 2 miles from here in another exclusive gated community. Notice I said 'another' to underscore the distinction that I too live in an exclusive gated community. Thanks Hope!
I had ordered Starbucks and was 2 minutes from picking it up when I got the call--or alert. I'm thinking: airport! This early? Well, a high school student on her way to her boyfriend who was going to take her to school. Her dad was out of town. Her mom was, she didn't say where she was. Very chatty. Was deciding what to do for a career. An anesthesiologist or a career in the music industry. huh? It reminds me of a comedian whose son was growing up but was still a kid and said: 'dad. I want to be a lawyer--or a dinosaur.' Tough career choices. I told her 'stick with medicine.' She asked if I drove full-time and of course, I told her what I did, reluctantly since she might ask me for a job. She said: "that explains the nice car!" I didn't have the heart to tell her it was a Hyundai.
It was unusually quiet so I went home to do stuff. No moseying today.
About 10:45, I got an alert for a pickup about 4 miles away. It said: 12 minutes to get there. It took me 6. My guest said: 'It said it was a longer wait.' I told her 'they don't figure in if the driver is from New York.'
It was an OK neighborhood but there was a late-model Mercedes in the garage and a very attractive woman came out. About 5'9", brunette, jeans and luggage. For those of you waiting for soft core stories, you'll have to keep waiting. I pegged her at about 50.
She works in the equine field (I said this is a clean story, folks!) and was on her way to a horse-judging event. We talked about where she was living, her desire to move to a place in Scottsdale more upscale and that it was not to easy to meet great men. She had great looks and a great sense of humor.I mentioned my wife was on life support and could go at any moment.
But seriously, she asked about the kind of riders I get.I mentioned the workout coach who called me her 'driver' and that led into a discussion of 'kids today,' who don't have the same values we had. She was single now and as I slipped off my ring, slowly (kidding) I went on about rides for kids going to school.
I blamed it on helicopter parents who don't find the time to take their kids to school. She told me the problem was, and she heard from friends and neighbors kids, that in quite a few cases, the parents can't get the car started in the morning with the breathalyzer guard on the steering wheel-or worse, they couldn't get up from partying the night before.
That led me into my old man discussion about parents wanting to be best friends to their kids and not getting in their space. When our parents wanted free time, they sent us outside to play, which was safe. Then, some of us, myself included, sometimes used TV as a babysitter. Today, with the onslaught of social media,it has removed a level of communications and parental supervision that I think, is a bad thing.
I remember when Erica used to listen to Eminem and others. I asked her once:'so is it ok to be called a biatch or a ho?" She said: 'dad: I listen to the beat, not the lyrics.' That made sense: I had no idea what a 'bustle in a hedgerow was, and I'm sure my parents felt the same about my music.
But when the interaction is turned over totally to the internet and running after your own fun takes precedence over your kids, someone has to sit down with the parents. But I'm not sure who that someone is.
I dropped off Ms. Texas at the airport and got an alert for a pickup,When I came around the terminal, they said: "we cancelled you.We don't think you have room for our luggage and golf clubs." I was a tad annoyed and while they paid a cancellation fee, I had lost a lucrative ride back up north.
So, I went to Costco,Trader Joe's and Total Wine and called it a day.
Labor Day is a holiday where we honor those who contribute to our country through hard work. Being an Uber Driver, I'm taking the weekend off.
