On The Road Again: The Search For Purpose

Next Thursday, May 10, I will embark on a 12 day road trip..to find purpose. What does that mean? I turn 65 in just 12 weeks.
We create triggers in our lives: when we graduate, when we lose our virginity, when we get married, when we have children, when we hit 40, 50. When our parents die. When our children die. When we have health issues. When WE die.
I have a great life. Erica's mom, Carol was a great wife and mom. Hope embraced Erica as they both dealt with her loss in their own ways, they helped me through mine. Extraordinary bold and compassionate women.
I told Hope that I wanted to find purpose in life. Not a mid-life crisis. I had been through that. I wanted to 'go on the road,' for a few weeks. See old friends, people who impacted me from youth to career. People I wanted to see. Kinda simple.
I don't know about most couples. I just know about me and Hope. She gets me, and I get her. We're not always on the same page..or the same planet…but I never doubt her support.
I'm going on the road. Sightseeing. Pulling off on roads that may be off the map.
I talked about triggers. 2001 was a trigger. When I became a dad who lost his daughter. 17 years later, a new trigger…65.
Looking at the next 20 years, my typical life span, give or take a few.
Leaving the past, but taking the love with me. Moving FORWARD. That is not so easy. Seeing the last quarter of my life, I look at the life my wife and I have. Erica is there with me, but how much it pains me, my sorrow is my past but part of my fabric. Tattered but still intact. I leave the bad and only take the good.
I have chosen to see what is ahead of me and how to make the future my best, not my worst.
I am turning 65. The final chapter. It will be memorable.
It will be a capsule of everything I have lived.
I am going on the road. Seeing people who have been a big part of my life, It is only a piece of those who have influenced me or touched me but there's only one me to go around. And thank g-d for that.
I'll be posting on FB (of course), blogging on uberrocknride dot com and taking all kinds of pics.
Stay tuned.
